The emphasis of silence maintained among the Handmaids employs Foucault's authority, where knowledge and truth breed power. Yet silence allows Offred to escape with “those rights to act as an individual for her own well-being and happiness, which are not injurious to the natural rights of others.” (Paine) The Handmaids use the darkness as a liberation, "we learned to whisper almost without sound... in this way we exchanged names", names are the only way to encapsulate the importance of a character, removing the names of the Handmaids. Atwood offers a Marxist critique of society in which a group of nameless women under named men, “commanders,” will always be inherently unequal. The “night” sections are those in which Offred manipulates the situation the most; however, the reliability of these reflections calls into question how trustworthy the protagonist is. “If it's a story I'm telling, then I have control over the ending.” Obviously, this raises doubts about the ending of the novel, but ultimately suggests that Offred manipulates the situation to comfort herself through a more positive version of events. Unlike the private knowledge of Atwood's novel, Fahrenheit 451 uses the private knowledge of book burning to benefit the future.
