I read the book Head Case by Sarah Aronson. Characters Frank Marder: Frank is the main character of the book. When he is seventeen, Frank makes the wrong decision to drink and drive after a party. He crashes his car, kills two people and is paralyzed from the neck down. The struggle to deal with his paralysis reminds him of the accident he must learn to deal with every day. At the end of the book, Frank learns to accept his condition and becomes grateful for what he is still able to do. Frank's Parents: Frank's parents dedicate countless hours every day to helping Frank and making sure he has everything he needs. They must learn to adapt to a selfless life by putting Frank's needs before their own. While this is often difficult and frustrating, they ultimately come together as a family to make the best of their situation. Ruth Stein: Ruth is the mother of Meredith Stein, Frank's girlfriend who was killed in the accident. After her daughter's death she had a heavy and unforgiving heart, but as the story progressed, Ruth was able to forgive and was one of Frank's biggest supporters. She blogged as "anonymous" and told people they shouldn't be so hard on Frank: He's paralyzed for the rest of his life. Plot One night was enough to change the life of seventeen-year-old Frank Marder. forever. One Saturday night, Frank was at a party with his friends and was having a great time. They were dancing, talking and drinking. After the party, and a few too many drinks, he was driving his girlfriend, Meredith, home and crashed. Frank killed two people that night: Meredith and an old man crossing the street. In addition to killing two people due to his poor decision that night, Frank is left paralyzed... middle of paper... with his parents when they try to help him. He and his parents feel frustrated and impatient when something doesn't go as planned. Arguments often occur about how Frank wants something done because he can't do it himself. Person vs. Society: Frank must learn to deal with people who don't forgive his mistakes and think he should receive further punishment. It is difficult for him to hear negative remarks and unforgiving comments from strangers who say he should have greater consequences, even if he is paralyzed for life. Person vs. Nature: Frank encounters many problems with his environment and his surroundings. Because he is unable to move anything below his neck, it is difficult to maneuver and live comfortably in his environment. His inability to move around his home and be self-sufficient is a constant battle between Frank and nature.
