Researchers have found that the majority of all public school students in one-third of American states now come from low-income families. “Children living in poverty experience higher absenteeism or drop out of school all together because they are more likely to have to work or care for family members” (McIntyre). “Dropout rates of students aged 16 to 24 who come from low-income families are seven times more likely to drop out than those from families with higher incomes” (McIntyre). Graduating without a high school or college diploma is a great way to ensure that the generation raised in poverty stays in this situation for the long term. If they don't get enough education to get a job with a good salary, the cycle of poverty will never be broken. John Galbraith made the proper education of children one of the main points of his article “The Position of Poverty.” He argued that we need to invest in good education for children so that they have a bright future ahead of them
