Functionalists compare society to biological anatomy, where institutions within society act like human organs as they all depend on each other and if there was a flaw in one of them it would have a impact as a Total. Davis and Moore talk about the inequalities evident in today's society and explain how they are necessary to ensure that the most important jobs are carried out by the most capable and intelligent beings such as doctors and parliamentarians. They go on to explain how this occurs through certain rewards and roles assigned through employment. These jobs require years of study and training to complete successfully and will therefore be entrusted to the most capable individuals, whether higher or lower level.
