Describes Fortunato as “rich, respected, admired, loved; happy, like I once was. You are a man who will be missed. It doesn't matter to me” (252). Montresor feels offended that Fortunato seems to look down on the fact that he is not a Freemason. And when Fortunato explains that he forgot the Montresor family coat of arms, Montresor becomes insulted. This explains that Montresor is actually jealous of Fortunato, which is probably the real reason he kills him. Throughout the story, Montresor does not justify his reasons for committing the murder. He reveals nothing of the “thousand injuries” (250) inflicted on him by Fortunato, nor does he even reveal the details of the alleged injuries that would have led him to swear revenge. The Montresor family motto, “nemo me impune lacessit” meaning “no one insults me with impunity” (252), indicates that Montresor killed Fortunato only to protect the family
