Topic > Abortion should be legal - 2315

The World Health Organization believes that a quarter of all offspring in the world end in induced abortion. More precisely, the number of induced abortions is almost 50 million every year(Berer, M., 2000 ). Induced abortion means “abortion deliberately caused by drugs or mechanical means” (Stedman, TL, 2008). It can be defined as an abortion preceded by initiative, which is opposite to spontaneous abortion. According to World HeaWHO (1993), the number of women who choose to have an abortion is approximately 1.5 million in the United States each year. Nearly half of American women experience an unplanned pregnancy, and 54% of these end in abortion (Finer LB and Zolna MR, 2011). Nearly one fifth of pregnancies end in miscarriage (Jones RK & Kooistra, K, 2011). Abortion laws have developed differently from country to country as there are different social and moral perceptions due to different cultures. In Britain, only medical professionals are able to provide abortion(rethink abortion p13). While this is Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic, the law only allows women to obtain information about abortion and to have an abortion outside their states (reflection on abortion p19). Abortion is always a sensitive topic when it is considered as the killing of a person which surrounds with social and political debate. It seems that the debate between anti-abortion and opponents is increasingly heated (BEYOND CHOICE P19). Women tend to choose illegal abortion when legal abortion is not available, even if it is unsafe with unfavorable conditions and unqualified provider (Berer, M., 2000). Traditionally, medical laws and ethics are against abortion mainly for two reasons: first of all, it seems that killing a developing human being such as the fetus should be... middle of paper... Spain and Turkey. A balanced law would protect both “true conscientious objection” and women's right to autonomy to obtain a legal and safe abortion (making abortion safe). In summary, legal abortion appears to be an effective approach to limit the population and provide a safe healthcare solution to women who have unwanted children. Conclusion In conclusion, making abortion illegal may not prohibit abortion, but cause problems due to harmful influence on women, unsafe abortion. It appears that making abortion legal is an effective approach to addressing these issues. Abortion is not a kind of murder, but a respect for the right to autonomy. Furthermore, abortion has limited harm on women's health compared to the harm done by illegal abortion. It still seems a challenge for the government to find a balance to make abortion legal and guide citizens on the right path.
