Then seven southern states seceded and formed a new nation, the Confederate States of America because they wanted to have slaves to work for them. With the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, the new law banning slaves and the secession of seven states, the civil war between the North and the South began. The 1989 film Glory, directed by Edward Zwick, is a Civil War classic based on the story of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment, which is for former slaves and free black men. Colonel Robert Shaw was in charge of the regiment, Major Forbes was his assistant and they worked together to make this regiment.
