Abraham Lincoln won the 1860 election, being the first Republican president; he said he would keep slavery out of the United States. Then seven southern states seceded and formed a new nation, the Confederate States of America because they wanted to have slaves to work for them. With the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, the new law banning slaves and the secession of seven states, the civil war between the North and the South began. The 1989 film Glory, directed by Edward Zwick, is a Civil War classic based on the story of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment, which is for former slaves and free black men. Colonel Robert Shaw was in charge of the regiment, Major Forbes was his assistant and they worked together to make this regiment. An important character in the film, of the 54th Regiment was the soldier Tripp, he was a slave and decided to enlist for the chance to save the slaves of the south. Over the course of the film, these characters, Colonel Shaw, Major Forbes, and Private Tripp, begin to demonstrate how they are changing thanks to the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment. Colonel Shaw shows a change from treating the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment so harshly to treating them well and with a loving attitude. much respect. When they first assigned Colonel Shaw to be the leader of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, he was afraid because he didn't think he had that ability in him and because he was afraid of having the first black regiment, but he didn't want to show it. anyone, so he hid it by really taking on the role of the colonel. When he first met them he hired someone to teach him how to march, but he treated them badly. After a few days he fired the coach and fought to get him the blue university... middle of paper... tell everyone "come on" so they can win Fort Wagner and gain the freedom they had always dreamed of. In conclusion everyone changed, all those characters believed in something, they believed that black men should also have freedom and equality. All the characters had the same vision, to end the Civil War and give freedom to the slaves of the South. The only thing is, the entire 54th Massachusetts Regiment didn't get to see it become a reality because they all died in the Battle of Fort Wagner. But I know that all the slaves thanked the 54th Massachusetts Regiment because they gave their lives fighting for their freedom. Everyone came together, everyone became one. Character changes teach us that we are all the same, we cannot treat anyone differently, not because of the color of our skin, but because we are all human beings. We can all unite and be a strong nation.
