The simplified plot of the Decameron is about ten wealthy people, seven women and three men who have abortions from their city homes in an attempt to avoid mysterious death by changing their location in the countryside. Over the course of ten days, Boccaccio recounts their daily activities, through his frame-narrative writing technique, every single character tells a story every day. As stated in Boccaccio's introduction, “…most passed away from this life without anyone witnessing them; very few were those who left amidst the pious laments and beloved tears of their loved ones, far from it, most took to the habit of laughing and celebrating while their loved ones died (Boccaccio 1). In an emergency, the loyalty of some is broken and people adapted to a selfish attitude fend for themselves. The characters' actions correspond to the Boccaccio passage quoted above because the ten characters also leave everything behind, including their loved ones, to reside in the countryside and spend their last days on earth having fun. Arguably, the characters behave immorally; something that goes against the typical view of the Catholic religion, but during a period of crisis circumstances can change.
