During the Halloween holidays, nurses are always advertised with very revealing clothing items that show off their bodies. The media then exaggerated their profession by calling it very sexual. According to Terry Ferns and Irena Chojnacka: "Reading the newspaper articles identified, what is striking is the constant portrayal of nurses as a sexually available stereotype." (p. 1029). Ferns and Chojnacka recalled research from articles that identified terms such as naughty, sexy, kinky and saucy as characteristics of nurses. I believe that nurses are indeed sexy in the sense that intelligence is attractive but their brilliance is not portrayed as a sexual stereotype. I think nurses should be recognized more as intelligent rather than sexual. Because nurses are seen as provocateurs, men are highly excluded and harassed when entering the nursing field. The ultimate view of nurses is that they are kind and caring, which shifts men from society's perspective of a professional nurse. Men are generally seen as strong and rough, which contrasts greatly with the general view of a nurse. For this reason, men are rejected and perceived as unsuitable for the nursing profession.
