Today, video games are part of many people's lives. Some were born with video games in their lives and others started playing video games when they grew up. There are many types of video games such as role-playing games, strategy games, shooting games, and sports games. But are there any effects on people who play video games too much? Some say video games cause violent behavior and can cause addiction. Others say that it helps create peace in their mind and makes people more sociable in society. Today video games are more violent than ever, for example: Gears of War, God of War and Grand Theft Auto. Each game has a rating on the packaging and these three games had a large M on the packaging, indicating that the game was rated as a mature game. “Critics argue that these games desensitize players to violence, reward players for simulating violence, and teach children that violence is an acceptable way to resolve conflicts” (Video Games Contribute to Youth Violence). According to a New York Times article “Playing video games can and does arouse hostile impulses and mildly aggressive behavior in the short term” (Carey). An example of violent behavior against people is the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School where thirteen people were killed. The two teenagers who committed the massacre were addicted to violent video games, and people believed that these games motivated them to shoot. Addiction is everything in today's world, there is an addiction to marijuana, alcohol, methamphetamines and other types of drugs. But who would have thought that video games would also be addictive? In one article it is said that “Children and adolescents who played more video games and who had lower social competence and greater impulsivity were at greater risk of bec...... half of paper...... are born with video games will be a gamer until they get bored and those who were into video games until they got older may get rid of their games because they weren't a big part of their life. It all depends on the person who plays video games, if he can distinguish reality from fantasy there will be no problems. Works Cited • Benedict, Carey. "Shooting in the Dark.".
