Fieldwork is the practical component of anthropology. The person will immerse themselves in the culture they will study. These people have to pay attention to every little thing that happens while they are there. It is important that the ethnographer stays just over a year to experience things he missed while in culture shock (page 42). They need to adapt to the native lifestyle and stop seeing the things they do as something foreign and see them as part of their culture. Even though the student will be an alien in the culture they find themselves in, they will have to try to live and immerse themselves in the way the locals live. Anthropologist Marjorie Shostak formed personal relationships with their cultural advisors. Shostak worked with the !Kung San in the Dobe region of southwestern Africa, on the border between Botswana and South Africa (page 41). Fieldwork must be done to truly study the resulting culture
