The idea of killing yourself for a cause is unimaginable to most people; however, for some individuals it is a heroic act. Young men, women and even children have taken their own lives in this fatalistic practice. Suicide bombers truly define the meaning of the word terror. This phenomenon is far from new to the world in World War II; Japanese pilots called kamikazes voluntarily committed suicide by crashing their planes into American warships in a last-minute attempt to avoid losing the war. Similarly, suicide bombers bind their bodies with explosives and detonate themselves in crowds, hotels, markets and embassies around the world. Alarmingly, there are many people willing and committed to carrying out such missions. The driving force behind suicide bombers is not based solely on religion; in fact, it has just as much to do with revenge, humiliation and indoctrination. In some cases, suicide bombers decide to take such actions as an act of revenge. Paul J. Smith, author of “The Terrorism Ahead” notes that revenge is the driving force behind some suicide attacks as a direct response to an event, such as the death of a family member (142). In the Middle East, this scene is repeated daily. On May 19, 2003, Hiba Daragmeh blew herself up in the Amaquim mall in Alfula, Israel, in retaliation for her brother's imprisonment in Israel (Smith 142). The eternal land conflict between Israel and the Palestinians has led to many casualties on both sides. A suicide bomber detonates a bomb in Israeli territory and kills Israeli civilians. Israel reacts and attacks cities suspected of terrorists. During these skirmishes innocent Palestinians and Israelis are killed, which fuels the thirst for mutual revenge... middle of paper... ned. The trainer's job is to prepare the bomber for a test attack and to anticipate any potential disruptions that might thwart the plan (68). Once the suicide bomber completes the mission, the suicide bomber's family receives compensation and becomes a celebrity in the community. The reasons behind suicide bombings are varied and wide-ranging. Many factors come into play such as punishment, degradation and propaganda. Terrorist groups justify this action as the only way to respond because they may not have sophisticated weapons or military personnel. The fact remains that new candidates are constantly growing to replace each suicide mission, which forces terrorist groups to believe that it is the right action to take. Furthermore, the fear, terror and death caused by suicide bomb explosions can devastate people psychologically and alter social life..
