Geoffrey Chaucer's The Wife of Bath, found in the Canterbury Tales, is a genre of romance that originated in northwestern France during the medieval period. In the story, the Wife of Bath follows several steps on how power is viewed. Also, the story contains many sexual parts, which plays an important role in that time period. The Wife of Bath is an opinionated woman who has similar and different ideas about women, men, and marriage than how society viewed those ideas in medieval times. The Wife of Bath's view of marriage is different from how her society views weddings. The knight in the story is forced to marry the older woman because of the favor she does for him. In medieval society, women had no say. Of course this wasn't out loud and his punishment, as decided by the queen of the court, is that he must find out what women desire most. Originally, the king wanted the knight's head cut off. When the Knight rapes a virgin and takes "her virginity" (64), by taking advantage of the virgin he feels he is gaining power but in reality he is losing everything he has. Stated in The Wife of Bath's Tale, “Which doomed the knight to lose his head, by law. He was as good as dead." (67-68). The Wife of Bath uses the knight's rape of the virgin to make her case against those medieval men who abused their authority over women. When the knight returns to the courtroom he says: “My lord and lady in general, a woman wants the same sovereignty over her husband as she has over her lover” (213-215) During the Middle Ages women had no power over anything, unless they were queens Power in the Middle Ages, written by Mary Erler, states: “The wives and consorts of these powerful men were generally seen as decorative assistants, while ordinary women were assumed to have no power whatsoever” (Eler Il the woman's job, being a wife, is to take charge of all the household chores, including child care.
