Recession is a period of temporary economic decline and the United States has suffered from recessions numerous times in the past and is bound to happen again. But “graphic design may be recession-proof because good graphic design can be seen as a necessity or an “inelastic good” in economic terms” (Jackness). In the 1970s the graphic design industry underwent a major technological shift, which stimulated investment in printing presses as the relative cost of four-color and prepress fell considerably, challenging inflation, high interest rates and high unemployment rates at the time. During the last recession, 1990-1991, graphics industry employment, wages, and establishment grew dramatically, outpacing normal industry growth. Even after a couple of years, the number of establishments has increased even as full-time employment has decreased. This was due to a reason, the same one that contributed to the success of the industry in the 70s, technology (Romano). Programs like Creative Suite, which includes Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and other programs, were created in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The development and accessibility of the program has meant that even if graphic designers don't work in design studios or companies, they can still set up a home office on the cheap and become freelancers. The development of technology eventually led to the development of the Internet, which became an abundant source of work for the graphic design industry and its designers. If a recession were to hit, web-based projects would provide job security for graphic designers.
