Topic > The Fault in Our Stars by John Green - 693

For this project, I decided to read "The Fault in Our Stars", a novel written by John Green. This book is about sixteen-year-old Hazel Grace, who is diagnosed with thyroid cancer. She attends the Cancer Support Group weekly, where she meets Augustus Waters, a "very intelligent and attractive" boy who is currently in remission. They both like each other and their relationship grows and develops over the course of the book as they battle cancer together. Along the way, Hazel learns many important lessons about life. For starters, this story mostly takes place in Indianapolis in the 21st century. The story also takes place in hospitals, in support groups in churches and in their respective homes. From this, I can understand when Hazel describes feeling confined: "It was a cloudy, Indiana day: the kind of weather that traps you." In the second half of the story, the setting shifts to Amsterdam, which is the exact opposite of Indiana. Augustus and Hazel both confess a feeling of freedom, describing how they feel that anything is possible. I chose to use a jar full of water to represent the setting. Since Amsterdam is 2 meters below sea level and is constantly at risk of flooding, it is like a "drowning city", and Hazel could similarly be called a "drowning girl", as the fluid in Her lungs are eating away her life. The jar represents his feeling of confinement in Indianapolis, and when I open the lid it represents his feeling of freedom in Amsterdam. Next I will talk about the plot of the story. The plot of the story, as I mentioned, is about sixteen-year-old Hazel Grace who meets Augustus Waters at the weekly Cancer Support Group. They fall in love with each other, their relationship grows stronger and blossoms through... middle of paper... his room. That is, of course, until he meets Augustus Waters. At first, she tries to deny her feelings for him, but they become too strong and eventually he teaches her to open up and live her life to the fullest. When Augustus dies, Hazel says she doesn't regret her relationship with him, which also reminds me of the theme that "to have loved is better than never to have loved." Therefore I think a key with a lock would be the best symbol to represent the conflict. Overall, I think “The Fault in Our Stars” was an amazing but horribly heartbreaking book. There were so many moments where tears leaked, as well as moments where I simply had to laugh. The book was quite emotional, Works Cited http://www.theguardian.com/childrens-books-site/2014/apr/03/review-fault-in-our-stars-john-green http://www. dragonfly-site .com/significamento-simbolizzare.html
