In "The Myth of the Cave", man was able to study the rest of the world while other men were still chained to watch the shadows. He observed the sun and how it gave rise to the seasons. Later, he returned to the cave and tried to share what he had discovered with the other men, but they laughed at him because he could not see shadows as well as them. The only reason he couldn't see the shadows was because he came out of the cave and was introduced to the sun. They thought it ruined their vision when in reality their vision has been ruined forever. In Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Jonathan returns to his fold after learning so much from Chiang. He also wanted to share what he had learned, but he too was rejected. The elderly seagull told the flock to ignore him and that anyone who talks to him is also an outcast.
