Time magazine in London declared early in his career: “How do you spell Pelé? GOD” (3). The greatest footballer in the history of the sport is undoubtedly Pelé. His statistical resume is unmatched by anyone who has ever played this great sport. She started her career in style and didn't stop until her retirement. Even after the end of his career he contributed to working for a world in favor of children. Pelé's life did not begin idealistically, he was only discovered by chance, but he grew up to become the greatest footballer ever and used that fame and fortune to do even greater deeds for the less fortunate. Pelé, born in Tres Coracos, Brazil on October 23, 1940 and was called Edson Arantes do Nascimento, but was called "Dico" (1 and 2). His parents, Dondinho and Celeste Nascimento, were very poor and when their son wasn't playing football, he polished shoes for little money as a child (2). At the age of 11, Dico was discovered by one of the best Brazilian footballers of the time, Waldemar de Brito, while playing football with some friends on the street (2). Brito worked with him for 4 years before he started taking him to professional clubs to evaluate him (2). When he brought Dico to a Santos team from Chile, Brito declared to the incredulous managers “this boy will be the greatest footballer in the world” (2). The boasts worked and in his first professional match the young Edson, who became known as Pelé, scored 4 goals, leading Santos to a 7-1 (2) victory. By the age of 16 he had secured a starting position in the team. He had also earned a spot on the Brazilian national team in just his second year as a professional (2). At the age of 17, Pelé played in the 1958 Football World Cup (1). He surprised the world by scoring six goals over the course of the tournament, including two in the championship match of Brazil's 5-2 win over Sweden, giving Brazil its first World Cup trophy (1). In the 1970 tournament he scored a sensational goal in the victory against Italy, Brazil's 100th goal at the World Cup and the one he remembers most (3). Brazil, unfortunately, did not win that tournament, but Pelé helped them win two more, for a total of three World Cup wins in 12 years. (1).
