Of all the ways to worship God, perhaps one of the greatest is through music. From the beginning of the history of salvation, music has been used by all the faithful and perhaps one of the greatest expressions of musical worship in the church would be Gregorian chant. Having roots dating back to the ancient Jews and having been perfected throughout church history, Gregorian chant is undoubtedly the pinnacle of unified Christian music, taking on a central role in Catholic worship. It is still considered a great experience that everyone can enjoy, but it contains the words of the Lord in an elegant way. Throughout the history of the Church, Gregorian chant has grown to become one of the Church's most important forms of worship through its constant influence from the past, its development by entire nations adopting it, and its dissemination and revisions by the continually evolving Church. Chant developed over many years, starting with the ancient Jews, and, through these different expressions of chant, Gregorian chant developed, from the 1st to the 6th century, reaching its peak in the 4th century. It became the standard for all musical worship in the Catholic Church and was taken up by a school of Frankish monks who documented and annotated many chants in the 9th century. It is still used today, although rarely, because it went into decline after the Vatican II rulings. Despite everything we know about Gregorian chant, there is no complete consensus on its history, due to the “… paucity of concrete information on the development of chant” (Apel 33). This leads many historians to take different positions regarding its development; much of the story is left to conjecture. Perhaps one of the greatest examples of a...... medium of paper ......occupying a completely central role in the mass, often still takes part in it. Although Gregorian chant is no longer a common occurrence in the Mass, it can still be easily found in popular culture, for example serving as inspiration for many modern songs, as well as being easy to find in any store. As one of the most iconic songs of the Church and important forms of worship, Gregorian chant is the product of centuries of development of past music, revisions over the centuries, and its diffusion and assimilation of other forms of singing. Gregorian chant, although no longer in vogue, still plays an important role as a method of worshiping God with heavenly beauty through music. Just as King David played music to please the Lord, all the faithful should do so too, and by doing so, they will unite into one community singing together, and Gregorian chant is perhaps one of the best methods to do so..
