Scholarships for Artistic Students1. PurposeCollege is an important part in continuing education and is also the best time for students to hone their skills and become the best they can in their field. The inclusion of support, both financial and mental, is instrumental in obtaining a college education and should be given equally to both athletic and arts students. But every year, numerous athletes in the United States are offered college scholarships to recognize their talent and to encourage them to play at the university awarding the scholarship. At the same time, the same number of students with the same artistic talent are left to pay for college on their own because they are not offered as many scholarships as athletes. This unfair and unequal distribution of scholarships poses a threat to the college education of arts students everywhere. It's a problem that occurs at every university in the United States, including Iowa State University, and it's a policy that needs to be changed so that college is an equally beneficial time for both athletes and artists. ScopeIn this article I will compare information on athletic and arts scholarships offered at Iowa State University. As I do so, I will focus on the difference in number, criteria, and money awarded by these scholarships. I will discuss the needs for changing this policy, the ideas I have on how to change it, the benefits that will come from changing this policy, and how to implement these changes.3. History and needs According to a list of scholarships distributed by Iowa State itself, the college offers a greater number of athletic scholarships than arts scholarships. With scholarships available in every sport played at Iowa State, the chances of an athlete receiving a scholarship are much higher than those of an arts student. In fact, according to information provided by Iowa State, an incoming athletics student is five times more likely to receive more scholarships than an equally qualified art student. The reason for such difference is that mostly general scholarships are offered to artistic students, and these scholarships are offered to all students, including athletes, thus making the competition and chances of receiving such scholarships very more difficult. Scholarships offered by Iowa State should be of equal amount, especially those focused specifically on arts and athletics.
