Topic > Effect of Computers on Human Society - 614

The first development of computers began in the late 1960s, at that time their common use was for complex mathematical calculations and they were mainly used by government companies. As time went by, computers became very popular and were used on a personal level. The Apple Lisa Computer was the first successful personal computer with a GUI interface introduced in 1983. Nowadays, computers have become extremely popular and are present almost everywhere. We are becoming overwhelmingly dependent on information technology which will cause a negative impact on human society due to the following reasons: lack of social trust, threat to privacy, health problems and lack of creative ideas. Social trust is what is used to describe relating to relationships with other people. The level of social trust may vary from person to person, but the excessive use of computers has indeed caused a lack of social trust. Before the popularity of personal computers, children and adults maintained their regular interactions, instead of depending on computers. Interacting with others is an important thing; this involves the exchange of different ideas from different people and helps maintain social trust. Professor Lee Cheng Ean from Taylor University Malaysia School of Communication says face-to-face communication is faster, easier and more convenient than computer-mediated communication, and face-to-face communication represents high social presence. Angela Sinickas, president of Sinickas Communications, Inc., also advised not to let face-to-face be eclipsed by technology (SCM, 2009). He stated that “all the online communication didn't make the employees any better... middle of paper......and they continued to reduce visual abilities, such as blurred distance vision, even after they stopped working on the computer . If nothing is done to address the cause of the problem, the symptoms will continue to recur and perhaps worsen with future computer use.
