Recently the Huntsville Independent School District school board decided it would be a great idea to jump into the twenty-first century and add technology to classrooms. School board members read articles like “Why Integrate Technology into the Curriculum?: The Reasons Are Many,” which explain why it would be a great idea to add technology into the classroom, as well as articles like “In Classroom of Future, Stagnant Scores” , which is about all the new ways of learning with technology. The one thing that both of these articles, as well as any article you will find both for and against technology in the classroom, says that when making this leap from traditional teaching to this new way a great deal of planning is required, unfortunately I feel that the Huntsville Independent School District decided to ignore the part about the need for proper planning. This lack of planning has resulted in a great deal of wasted class time, as shown in the chart above titled “Amount of Class Time.” Looking at the other graph above you can see that forty-two percent of class time is spent teaching, many believe this is a good amount of time and that nothing is taken away from the students. As you can see from the other graph above titled “Use of Instructional Time,” of that 42% only about half of the time is actually spent teaching the day's lesson. Unfortunately, the school district cannot go back, nor plan adequately; this is why I propose that the school district implement a training program for teachers to learn how to use the technology they have been provided with and how to fix the technology when it is not working properly. Huntsville High School has an amazing information technology program with students...... middle of paper ......terribly cold just to walk in first period and do nothing the first twenty minutes because the teachers can't use their technology? When I was a student at HHS, I experienced the above statement firsthand, and it sucks to feel like you got hit by an army tank and still go to school just to waste your time. I know that teachers who don't know how to use their technology can waste as little as five minutes or as much as half of class time. With just a little training and a small amount of money teachers will know what they are doing with this new technology. It's too late to turn back the clock and incorporate technology into the classroom the right way, but we can fix the problem, so let's fix it this way: No more sick kids will waste time just staring out the window until someone can come and fix the computer.
