Summarize the main points of the arguments of the theory/theorist you have read (1000 words)Marxism is considered a radically alternative vision of the development of economic, philosophical, political and sociological ideas theories of society in comparison with other theories and theorists. Marxists tend to be more macro sociologists who focus more on the larger society and the material production within it, rather than the individuals within it. Craib, I (1997:36) states that with Marx comes the realization that human beings are not the creators of society, rather than the creature and are the product of the society into which they are born. In other words, we do not create society, rather society shapes the people we are. This can be linked to the materialist conception of History. Marxists believe that the material and historical contexts in which an individual lives shape us. Although Marxists see us as subjects of social structures, we can also be agents of social change once we recognize that we belong to certain social classes and are sometimes bound by them. Craib, I (1997:36) talks about how Marx developed a unique idea of society. He emphasized the material conditions of people's lives and the importance of history. If our history and material context are manipulative, overbearing, and alienating, we should engage in more unrestricted politics in order to create change. This must be done on a class basis and not through individual strategies. Marxism can be seen as a political theory and has a strong view on the role of capitalism within society. Reiss, E (1997:51) states that capitalism exists because wealth-creating businesses are privately owned by a few and most people have to sell their labor and…middle of paper…struggles. As stated above, they believe that the ruling class dominates the working class and keeps it subjugated and controlled. There is one main selling point when considering Marxism, but it is only theoretical. Their vision of how society should be run is much better and aims for a more equal society. This would be of great benefit to everyone in the working class and especially to the lower classes. What questions and criticisms would you raise about explaining theories/theorists about how society works? (500 words) Reiss, E (1997:44) highlights the contradiction of the role of class struggle and productive forces in showing how society is shaped and functions. Historical materialism points towards productive forces, but elsewhere Marx emphasizes class struggle. This could be resolved by saying that it is both and that social groups approach conflict with forces and relationships
