Emotions Associated with Aging It is true that as we age, our physical and mental abilities can deteriorate. This shouldn't worry, it happens to everyone and is part of the miracle of life. Instead, we need to celebrate the aging process. Popular culture tries to tell us that older people are a burden, and we often accept this view and lock them away in nursing homes, forgetting about them until it becomes convenient to visit them. What we fail to understand is that the older generations of our society have so much to offer and are so willing to give, if we are willing to listen. No one wants to be forgotten in the last years of their life. This, I believe, is one of the major stigmas attached to aging, a sense of helplessness caused by society's desire to confine the elderly to homes, where they are out of sight and out of mind. Mitch Albom's book, Tuesdays With Morrie, changed my perspective on aging and older adults and can have a profound impact on how we, as a society, view older generations. We come to discover that Morrie, close to death, has accepted the fact that he has aged. He lived a full life and has few regrets. He doesn't want to change anything because he knows that the good times and the bad are all part of the process of life. There is nothing wrong with being old, he assures us, because he has lived a full life that has given him so much joy. At this point you may be wondering, "if this is an advertisement, what is this guy trying to do?" sell me?" Well, at the risk of sounding like an insurance salesman, I'm trying to sell peace of mind.
