I have always been fascinated by the written word, whether on television or in a magazine, the way we communicate our ideas and emotions through the 27 characters of the English language is a feat in himself and for himself. This is one of the many reasons why I chose Media Studies Production as one of my majors at Temple University. I am delighted to study media arts at the School of Media and Communications and intend to apply my skills in service to the world at large. While words and written media have been a concentration of mine, I have had limited exposure to the production side of my internship. Courses like Intro to Media Tech, Media and Society, and Intro to Media Theory really helped me understand the inner workings. After applying to Temple, I felt the urge to pursue my love of writing, yet I felt the responsibility to support the nine-year commitment tied to my love of music as well as the scholarship investment in my name on behalf of the Jazz department. With the financial challenges I face due to the ever-increasing costs of higher education, music offered me the opportunity to start saving at an early age. By the age of 10 I had won my first prize as a jazz saxophonist. 5 years later I had received regional and national recognition for my skills as a jazz musician; with scholarships ranging from $50 to $2,000, I was more fiscally prepared for college than the average 15-year-old. However, at the time I had received no such awards to demonstrate my writing skills, so for the next year I concentrated my efforts on writing a book. So, one year, two mentors, and a box of Acco® solid brass fasteners later I was on a stage in Florida receiving the national silver medal from the NAACP's ACT-SO competition (already having received the gold regionally) for my short play called In the Name of the Son, a drama about love, grief and acceptance. From that point on I had the opportunity to attend the University of Virginia's Young Writer's Workshop and work for Encompass, an amazing organization dedicated to teaching teachers how to create safe and fun learning environments based in Pasadena, California . All of this, however, couldn't compare to the 9-year background I had built in music, and so I decided to enroll in college with music hoping to pursue writing as a second major. However, when I finally arrived at Temple, my passion for music began to turn to frustration: I had people investing in an education that I no longer saw a future in. By the end of my sophomore year I had decided to remove jazz from my school. majors, as well as accompanying scholarships, and take out loans for the following
