The use of electronic cigarettes, or “vaping,” is slowly becoming a problem for our government. Vaping is starting to take over the smoking industry, so the government feels the need to step in and regulate it in some way. Electronic cigarettes, or “vapes,” should not be regulated by our government. The juice contained in these e-cigarettes consists of vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol and pure nicotine. More propylene glycol in the juice gives more flavor, and more vegetable glycerin increases vapor production. Vaporizers should not be regulated because they are a thousand times safer than traditional cigarettes, do not emit “secondhand smoke” and help people reduce the amount of cigarettes they smoke. However, nicotine is a drug and can increase blood pressure and heart rate in humans if used in excessive amounts. “In 2000, a Chinese pharmacist named Hon Lik invented the modern electronic cigarette, or electronic cigarette” (Hemphill). The Food and Drug Administration wants to subject e-cigarettes to the same regulation as traditional cigarettes. “In 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Pharmaceutical Testing Division tested 19 varieties of e-cigarettes produced by two suppliers, NJOY and Smoking Everywhere. Scientists found that tobacco-specific nitrosamines, known cancer-causing chemicals, were detected in all cartridges of one brand and in two cartridges of the other” (Hemphill). “Critics of the FDA study responded that the harmful chemicals detected were measured by researchers at levels equal to about one millionth of the concentrations considered relevant to human health. Furthermore, according to the results of a 2010 study conducted by Bost researchers... half of the paper... Prue Talbot of the University of California, Riverside, found another type of nanoparticles in e-cigarette vapor: l The analysis revealed a high concentration of heavy metals and silicates. It turned out that these metal nanoparticles came from the heating element, which consisted of a silver-coated nickel-chromium wire soldered with tin. During exposure to the heating element, the e-liquid appeared to pick up bits of metal, which were then carried into the aerosol” (Arnold). Electronic cigarettes, or "vapes", are not one hundred percent safe, but they are a thousand times safer than traditional cigarettes, they do not emit unpleasant smoke (Hemphill). In fact, no smoke is emitted, it's just steam. E-cigarettes can ultimately help people quit smoking traditional cigarettes and should not be regulated by our government.
