Topic > Essay on Civic Journalism - 941

By giving the average person who witnesses an unusual event the ability to record and share it, you increase the number of stories the world receives. Despite the many positive aspects this offers, it must be remembered that this is a view of history; that of the citizen who captures him. It is up to the viewer or reader to decide whether the story is informed or simply expresses an opinion. There are noteworthy situations such as the crash of the US Airways flight into the Hudson River, captured in images by a spectator before the media arrived, or the stories and photos captured at the time of the Boston Marathon bombings (Maps of World) . This instant capture of images and stories has been shown to aid in crisis management as officials are able to review the actual footage. Natural disasters reported by citizens in real time have provided administrators with information to better prepare for emergencies as well (Watson and Wadhwa). CNN has a citizen journalism initiative called iReport because it has realized the value of having access to photos, reports and stories of those living in areas where natural disasters occur. Through this initiative they received photos of floods, tornadoes, fires and other immediate images that would otherwise not be available to them (CNN). These stories, eyewitness accounts and snap reports also educate average citizens, especially in light of areas where there is no professional media coverage.
