Topic > Animal Liberation by Peter Singer - 1078

Animals can be man's best friend; however, they can also become your worst enemies after crossing certain boundaries. Peter Singer, who wrote Animal Liberation, in my opinion made valid points because animals have the right to live and we should give them their space. Human beings take everything for granted and never seem to learn until it's too late. Today, slaughterhouses abuse animals in disturbing ways and this must change. I will agree with Singer's concepts about animals because they have the right to live a peaceful life like humans; they have a life ahead of them once they are born. Singer argues that animals' interests should be taken into account throughout life. Singer wants to eliminate speciesism from our thoughts, which is a discriminatory human belief that all other animals are not as good as them, therefore they have no rights and we can do whatever we want to them. We shouldn't be the only "animals" on this earth who have a set of rights that we should abide by. Singer believes that animal rights should be taken into consideration. He is trying to point out how we should look after their interests regardless of the type of animal. The only difference between humans and animals is that we are different species and we should respect each other because we both live. Singer talks about how we know if animals feel pain and basically says we feel pain but react differently unless we are born without pain receptors, which is dangerous. He then gives the example of a mouse and a rock being kicked along the road, if you kick a rock nothing will happen because it is a rock and has no feelings; however, kicking a mouse is bad because it will suffer. This leads to a good point, such as how we humans kill animals for fun and... middle of paper... in our own way when we are trying to do something like deforestation. We should respect the living creatures in our world because they have a life that they should enjoy. People never want to see the dark side of an industry, which is why society doesn't seem to care or be informed. What it personally reminds me of is the show Scooby Doo which is about monsters and teenagers investigating them, trying to figure out what it is and at the end of every show it's always a human being who gives a powerful message because at the end of the day humans are the monsters, are we the monsters today? We must open our eyes before it is too late. Life is precious and we must appreciate every moment. Singer Quotes, Peter. Animal Liberation. New York: Singer, 1990.
