“Why does someone commit murder?' he asked softly. “I…” I blinked. "How do I know?" “Three reasons,” Christopher said. He raised a finger. 'Love.' Another finger. 'Vendetta.' And finally, a third finger. 'Religion.' Chronicle of a Death Foretold was set in South America. The novel was based on a murder that took place in Colombia in 1951. The narrator of the story discovers what really happened to Santiago Nasar and why it happened page after page. author had a great idea to make the novel seem more real and similar to a detective novel The author begins the book with the murder making the reader want to reveal what happened to Santiago Nasar himself and the entire community of the town were responsible for the death of Santiago Nasar, not only the Vicario brothers. Religion is a crucial aspect in the novel, it is the main cause combined with family honor of the death of Santiago Nasar. The Colombian society in which the novel is set takes a lot religion is serious. In Catholicism as in many other religions, a girl's virginity must be maintained until marriage. Everyone in the village contributed to making the city look better in view of the bishop's arrival. The previous years the Bishop did not really recognize the town, he did not stop to greet the people and bless them. The city was hoping he would stop in their town this year. “He won't even get off the boat. He will give the obligatory blessing, as always, and go back the way he came. He hates this city. (Chapter 1, page 8). Placido Linero didn't believe it and lost hope that the Bishop would stop in their city. Religion is mostly a positive aspect in people's lives, but in the novel religion is viewed more negatively. Santiago is killed... middle of paper......t men were looking for prostitutes throughout the novel and Santiago is killed because he had sex with Angela. This is also ironic. Gabriel also uses euphemism in his writings. Instead of saying murder, the people of the city say "barbaric work of death", they do it to show that the citizens are finding a way to make up for what happened in Santiago. The police chief, the only one who has the actual power together with the priest to stop the murder, did nothing. The police chief saw the Vicario brothers with knives, but he took the knives and did nothing, he should have put them in jail because they were carrying around dangerous weapons. The priest was notified by the people of the town. The priest was already aware of their plan, it is a religious duty to stop evil, but he did not know because he had forgotten about it due to the arrival of the bishop.
