Topic > Kanye West: The Black Buck - 2016

From being known for making hip-hop music, to being a fashion icon and starting a foundation with his mother to being seen as the most hated celebrity in the entertainment industry. Kanye West took it upon himself to defend his opinion when it came to the winner of Best Female Video at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. By going on stage and grabbing country music star Taylor Swift's microphone and basically stating that she didn't deserve the title. The event left the public and the television area very assorted. What some may not realize is that Kanye West displayed multiple stereotypes that society may think African Americans possess. Stereotypes shown were drunkenness, outspokenness, and a black man being a victim to a white man. Kanye West displays several black stereotypes in the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards television program, he is considered the modern "Black Buck". Kanye Omari West was born in Atlanta, Georgia and raised in Chicago, Illinois to two parents who both had Doctorates of Philosophy. At the age of three his parents divorced and he moved with his mother to Chicago. His father was a former Black Panther who was one of the first black photojournalists for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and later a Christian consultant. And his mother was an English professor at Clark Atlanta University and chair of the English department at Chicago State University before retiring to serve as Kanye West's manager. Coming from a background where he was raised by his mother and barely saw his father, which is a stereotype that African Americans are unfortunately known for, was one of the factors why Kanye West is the way he is today (West). Another factor... middle of paper... they were going around the Hurricane Katrina relief effort and the president felt like he wasn't doing his job well enough. Being the “Black Buck” today would make most people think that would be a bad thing. We have learned that being brutally honest, rebellious, and anti-white are all traits of the term. After evaluating the actions and words of hip-hop artist, Kanye West, he is definitely considered the modern day version of a “Black Buck”. Even though West has had previous events that made him sound like the term, MTV's 2009 Video Music Awards truly demonstrated and certified the fact that he is the current black rebel we see on television. From alcohol consumption leading to loudness and outspokenness to the victimization of a young white girl, these black stereotypes displayed necessarily demonstrate the fact that West is the modern “Black Buck".”.
