He is known as one of the most famous gangsters of the 1920s. Al Capone became famous for his empire built on illegal activities, but had public appeal due to his contributions and luxurious lifestyle. Alphonse "Scarface" Capone became a millionaire through bootlegging, prostitution, gambling and racketeering. His empire began when Capone worked under Johnny Torrio in New York. Torrio eventually moved to Chicago and Capone followed him. Torrio eventually abandoned the violence of the gangster lifestyle and returned to Italy. Capone who began managing the multi-million dollar empire. Newspapers of the 1920s "estimated that Capone's operations generated $100 million in revenue annually" (History.com Staff). Through his empire, Capone generated $60 million solely from bootlegging, the sale of illegal alcohol (History.com staff). Torrio advised Capone to live a low-profile lifestyle; Capone didn't listen. The headquarters of the operation was moved to the Grand Hotel in Chicago and he spent his wealth openly. Although Capone was listed as public enemy number one, the public saw him as a "Robin Hood". Throughout the early 1920s, "Capone fascinated Chicago and the nation with his combination of street brutality, elegant lifestyle, and ability to evade justice during the 1920s" (DiMauro). Capone's family lived in a modest suburban home but spent large sums of money. The American public was fascinated by his lifestyle and wealth. The audience also appreciated the way he resurrected from nothing. “For a portion of the American public, Capone was the symbol of the Horatio Alger success story… at the center of the paper… or medical problems. At some point in his life, he had contracted syphilis. Capone went to Florida to live out his final years on parole. In 1947 he suffered a massive heart attack and died at his estate in Florida (USA vs. Alphonse Capone). Capone and other gangsters of his time showed the lack of power of local governments. Capone also managed to avoid the federal government and hide all his illegal activities, but he was accused of tax evasion. Overall, Al Capone is one of the most infamous gangsters in American history. He built a huge empire on the popular illegal businesses of the 1920s. It fascinated the public until the horrific murders became very public and America's worst economic times began. The mafia era began to calm down. However, over 60 years later, Capone's legacy is still alive and his crazy life is shown through films.
