Topic > Mental Retardation in Flowers for Algernon - 1193

A drug to treat a type of mental retardation has shown promise. I chose this particular text because it refers to my novel "Flowers for Algernon", this article states that they have discovered a drug that will treat types of mental retardation and this refers to my book because Charlie, the main character of "Flowers for Algernon" he was a mentally retarded man and a couple of scientists performed an experimental operation on him to increase his IQ and intelligence. In this article they state that the drug has been tested on mice. "But recent studies in mice and other animals have given researchers hope that it may be possible to develop treatments that improve cognition and behavior in the conditions" and in "Flowers for Algernon" Algernon the white mouse on which the operation was successfully tested and in the article they claim to have tested the new drugs on mice and animals therefore the article and the novel refer to each other to the testing of the drug and the intervention on samples and mice. Part B: In the novel Flowers for Algernon Charlie is the character who speaks in the text. Charlie, the mentally retarded thirty-two-year-old, was told by the two scientists, Professor Nemur and Dr. Strauss, who performed the experimental operation on him to increase his intelligence, that he would have to write a progress report every day to see How's Charlie? adapt to the “new Charlie” and how he is developing and progressing. It's all told in the form of "Progress Reports" written by Charlie for a group of scientists working to increase his IQ. Reading the story from Charlie's point of view helps readers understand the story and get to know Charlie very well. “Flowers for Algernon” wouldn't have been a great story if it hadn't been written in the first... half of the paper... to make him a genius. The lifestyle change was difficult for him at first, his "friends" Frank and Joe started to hate him because he was too smart, they missed old mentally retarded Charlie because they enjoyed picking on him, so the Charlie's journey was hard .8) There is no text that I could connect to my novel on an exactly similar journey because Flowers for Algernon is a unique novel. I saw a movie called "Forest Gump" Forest Gump is a simple minded man born in Green Bow, Alabama. After entering Alabama public school despite his low IQ level, Forrest Gump lives a life full of adventure. This ties in a bit with my novel A Journey because Charlie and Forest Gump both have low IQ levels, but one naturally goes on with his life without any operations while Charlie has had an experimental operation to increase his IQ and his intelligence.
