Topic > What are the challenges of adoption? - 1579

A strong predictor of a better adoption outcome is how quickly the adoption occurs. Studies show that children under the age of 12 are more successful in attachment and social relationships (Harwood et al., 2013). There are many associations that can be made between adoptees and the adversities they had to face during pre-adoption; which can be classified into age at the time of adoption, maltreatment before and during the adoption, and history of exposure to substances. All of these circumstances can have a direct impact on the likelihood of mental health problems but, establishing good quality caregiver-adopter relationships becomes a significant mediator for these adversities and also for adoptees' academic outcomes (Harwood et al., 2013). Almost all adversities of pre-adoption and adoption itself are related to each other: the older the adoptee during adoption, the greater the likelihood of mental stress and poor academic success. The same relationship is found with maltreatment and exposure to substances. Adoptees might face some difficulties in life that the average person might not face, but data shows that adoption has no effect on the individual's self-esteem, on the contrary, it might even be higher than average.
