These actually stand for ante meridiem and post meridiem. Which because of our appreciation for history have a greater effect on every single person today in our time. When we study the constellations, an example would be: “Andromeda, the chained maiden from Greek mythology or Perseus, the demigod who saved her.” (Rosenburg, 2012) This is, in my mind, a perfect example of why history is important because for some people these are just names, but for us we really understand that they are quite significant because of the history. Furthermore, according to David Leverington, “Astronomy is the oldest and most fundamental science. It attempts to explain not only what the Universe is today and how it works, but also how it began, how it has evolved to the present day, and how it will develop in the future.” (Leverington, 1995) Without an appreciation for the history of astronomy, I believe we would not have the technological advancements to aid our scientific progress.
