Coming from a Western culture, it is easier to become familiar with the Gospels than any other written text. To get a different perspective on your outlook on life, it is best to compare the Gospels with another written text. One text that is a prime candidate to stand alongside the Gospels is the Bhagavad-Gita (or simply the Gita). These two texts can describe similarities and differences between the two cultures presented: Christianity and Hinduism. Keeping an open mind when reading cultural texts is what makes the texts more interesting and informs the reader more clearly. Analysis between a Western text and a non-Western text can really broaden a person's perspective. Since Krishna of the Gita appears to be very similar in many respects to Jesus Christ of the Bible, some have argued that the writers of the New Testament may have used ideas from ancient Hindu scriptures. While readers can draw many comparisons between the two texts and the two leaders, there are also several contrasting factors. The key idea is to determine whether these two cultures are really that different or could they be more similar to each other? Comparing the Gospels to the Bhagavad-Gita is the perfect way to show similarities and differences between each culture's ethics represented by religion, morality, and spirituality. Religion is a main concept in all cultures. The main contrast here is Hinduism versus Christianity. Readers get a glimpse of both completely separate worlds with similar ideas. In the Gospels, Christianity is at the center and Jesus is the savior. Specifically, the Gospel of John describes the identity of Jesus. Looking at the Bhagavad-Gita and comparing it to the Gospels of the Bible, it is clear that both texts contain many philosophical and spiritual ideas. By comparing these ideas to each other, readers can find that the main themes between these two texts involved religion, morality, and spirituality.
