Taking the Psychology Orientation course my first semester at Seton Hall University was probably the most beneficial part of my college experience thus far. Even though I came into college confidently declaring that I was a psychology major, I didn't really know what that meant or entailed before taking this course. This course has taught me valuable information about myself, the field of psychology, and how I can blend these two together. Everything I learned this semester in Psychology Orientation has helped me form a coherent and positive understanding of who I am and how this identity fits into the world of psychology. The first and most fundamental thing I learned this semester was how to examine my study skills. Using the self-assessments provided I was able to gain a more complete understanding of my strengths and weaknesses as a student. I have found that I excel at time management. I am not one to procrastinate and I am a very effective planner. Another personal area of strength regarding study skills is my ability to take notes. I have a very effective foundation in note taking and this has continued into my college career. While I am confident in my abilities as a student and feel that I have solid study skills, there is always room for improvement. During these semesters I learned that I could improve my skills in various ways. The first and simple step for a better studying experience would be to create a defined study space. I would be able to study more sophisticatedly if I spent my time at a clean desk with adequate lighting rather than in bed or on the floor. As a more complicated improvement, I could use a little practice and/or training to learn to distinguish what is crucial... middle of the paper... ase. Psychologists can work in courts, laboratories, government, or educational settings. These are other career options that I should explore during my academic career so that I can be sure to find the most enjoyable career for my future. With my future career in mind, obtaining the right degree is crucial. This course provided me with a basic understanding of the degree I need to earn to achieve my professional goals. This course did not delve into any aspect of the psychology field, however, the general teaching style was essentially helpful to me. Without this course I would be struggling to major in psychology without much guidance. I am grateful to have taken such a valuable course during the first semester of my freshman year, and I will carry its teachings with me throughout my time in college and into my subsequent career.
