In modern society, exceptional technology has brought man to a bright new era in which people are more likely to appreciate materiality. Then further problems are raised by technological development and further implicated with human emotions and basic desires. For example, in the novel "White Noise" by Don Delillo, the fear of death is emphasized and given a new definition that fits this asymmetric modern society, overwhelmed by all kinds of information from the mass media. People unconsciously devote themselves more to the stories that the media has invented for them, distracting the awareness of death by focusing on the mass media culture that is a ramification of this modern society. Ultimately, people become inundated with those mass media "conspiracies" to distance themselves from something that ironically weaken their basic abilities in life. Those advertisements and news on television have a greater impact on the human brain by reducing the ability to think. In the novel White Noise by Don Delillo, Babette made it a rule for her family to watch TV to be immune from the negative effect of mass media. “He seemed to think that if children watched television one evening a week with their parents or stepparents, the effect would be to diminish the appeal of the medium in their eyes” (16) Indeed, his behavior would only draw a vague line in the children's brain, which simply concentrates the ability to feel in the real world. This main goal of teaching people to be mean and tough as the best way to survive seems dubious, while Jack thought "The evening was actually a subtle form of punishment for all of us... Denise used these opportunities to counsel the girl younger about tenacity, the need to be bad in the world, think on your feet." (16) Human beings are emotional...... middle of paper ......and the more death will overwhelm them. However, regardless of what the subjects are, their definition changes as the era changes. By listening to too much negative information from the mass media, people's thinking and feeling abilities are gradually lost. Babette's naive idea to challenge the entire family to prepare for the world; the move for the convenience of people to buy SUVs for "safety"; Jack's family buys their own satisfaction and the conversation between Jack and Murray about taking a stand on the death vision; everyone is misled by the unbalanced balance of their physical and psychological life. All those "conspiracies" that cause these people to form a wrong perspective in life, are preventing people from finding the truth about themselves, as if providing people with the psychological comfort of materiality; and it becomes the most common type of life in this society.
