This is how the patient functions in everyday domains, including: physical, psychological, and social domains. Physically we observe how the patient feels about himself within a “sense of self” domain. This includes body image, the ability to achieve both a social and private self, and having a sense of identity. Leukemia patients often experience hair loss and skin rashes due to various treatment options. These factors can hinder how the individual reaches developmental milestones. For Kate Fitzgerald this includes having her first boyfriend, going to prom, experimenting sexually, and even being able to have relationships with friends she can hang out with. Especially in adolescent cancer patients, sense of identity is a vital attribute to understand. In Kate's situation it is clear that she lacks a sense of identity. She was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of five and only knew a life full of treatments and surgeries. She saw herself as a “sick Kate” always trying to get better, not a teenager discovering who she was and who she wanted to become. These factors can impact the patient's psychological domain. Collectively, when they are unable to experience these things due to cancer, it is not uncommon for them to exhibit signs and symptoms of depression, denial, or anxiety. In the film there is a scene where Kate was in bed for days
