Topic > Media Influences on Adolescents: Social Norms and Identity

Adolescence is a period in which an individual's sense of identity begins to emerge and most of his or her social norms are perceived. Nowadays, teenagers live in a world heavily inundated with media, which plays an important and usual part of a teenager's life. In a national survey conducted in 2009, teens spent an average of more than 7.5 hours a day using some type of media (Rideout, Foehr, Roberts, 2010). With this unprecedented access to the world, individuals learn and connect with many different people and ideas through media (Brown & Bobkowsi, 2011). As different forms of media play an influential role in adolescents' lives, their perceived social norms can be seriously affected. “Adolescents are influenced by the content they are exposed to, with respect to their knowledge of the world, their attitudes and values, and their behavior” (Steinberg, 2012). The media could lead to social norms perceived negatively by individuals, as adolescence is an important time because a sense of identity is emerging. Such assumed norms could influence or dictate an individual's identity. These false norms can be prevented through education and awareness, therefore young people should be taught about media fallacies through MLE (Media Literacy Education). Social norms are beliefs or rules established by society to define what behaviors are considered appropriate. or ideas. In our modern society, everyone is expected to conform to the same set of rules, especially teenagers. The media can alter or structure the adolescent's interests, motivations, and opinions about the world. Furthermore, researchers have argued that descriptive norms are the most significant indicators of risky behavior (Beal, ...... middle of paper ......dia could lead to negatively perceived social norms for adolescents because the adolescence is a vital time of identity formation These assumed norms could influence or dictate an individual's identity during this particular period of self-concept. Research has shown that media can contribute to an adolescent's negatively perceived norms regarding consumption of alcohol, relationships, sex and other mature topics that may be. Adolescence is the period in which an individual searches for and develops a sense of identity. False social norms perceived through the media can have a negative influence because adolescent identity is the most susceptible to peer influence prevented through education and awareness, therefore young people should be taught about media fallacies through MLE (Media Literacy Education).
