Topic > Analysis of Wealth Inequality in YouTube Videos in America

Wealth Inequality; it's not a topic that many people would choose to make a YouTube video about. However, earlier this year a video regarding this very topic went viral and received over 12 million views on YouTube. It's called Wealth Inequality in America and was produced by YouTube user Politizane. The problem of wealth inequality in the United States is well known, but this video shows the extent of the disproportion in a powerful and illustrative way. Use graphs to explain the issue of inequality in the simplest form. The video lasts just over six minutes. It's not very flashy but it illustrates the point the creators are trying to make very clearly. The series of charts is accompanied by what appears to be a Southern male voiceover and light background music. After an in-depth analysis of this viral video, it is my opinion that the creators decided to make a video that explains wealth inequality to the audience using simplistic means to allow the audience to better understand the complex issue of wealth inequality in which I I find they believe they have succeeded. The numerous graphs presented in this video appear visually simple, which allows the audience to better understand the point the creators are trying to convey: there is a large disparity in wealth among the American people. The video relies heavily on survey data from Dan Ariely and Michael L. Norton in a 2011 article titled Mother Jones, which showed Americans' faulty expectations about the distribution of wealth. Several topics are discussed in the video, including the topic of the 1%. It is argued and supported by data that 1% of the American population holds the majority of the country's wealth. The video seeks a simple...... middle of paper......ence to stay interested in what is being discussed,There is no shortage of visual aids in this video. The entire video is full of graphics and animations. The use of graphics alone may not have kept the audience engaged. Each graph is presented and is seemingly linked to the next via smooth animations. Charts are presented in a range of colors. However, the colors are not too busy as this may turn viewers away from watching the full six minutes. The unique pairing of graphics and animations creates a smooth transition from one topic to another. This allows the audience to follow the meaning of the video. All graphs are explained through voiceover and a key is also presented. This allowed information to be conveyed to the public in a clear and meaningful way. The simplistic way in which this is done is of great value to the public's understanding of the topic.
