Topic > Pilgrimage to the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad - 790

The Prophet Muhammad died in 632 AD It was believed that he was the Seal of the Prophets, that is, the last prophet; therefore his tomb is a very sacred place (A Concise Introduction to World religions, 210-215). Visiting the Prophet's tomb is a controversial issue. Scholars have different perspectives on the journey to his tomb, each based on Islamic law, the shari'ah. Al-Nawawi and Bin Baz each have different but similar rulings on the correct way to pilgrimage to the Prophet's burial site. Abd al-Aziz Bin Baz has a very specific set of circumstances about visiting the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad. He suggests that someone cannot visit Madinah with the sole purpose of seeing his tomb. Bin Baz explicitly states: “It is not permissible to travel to Medina with the intention of visiting the tomb of the Prophet (peace be upon him) or the tomb of other people.” Bin Baz bases his theory on the hadith in which Muhammad says that no one should go anywhere other than the three main mosques (the Holy Mosque in Mecca, the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, and the Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem). That said, it is still possible to see the Prophet's burial site. It is permissible for someone to travel to Medina with the intention of praying inside the Prophet's Mosque, during this visit they may also see Muhammad's tomb. The hadith also recommends visiting the tomb, but also suggests visiting the tombs of Abu Bakr and Umar (Fatawa of Shaykh Abdulaziz b. Baz Volume 8). Shaykh Muhi al-Din al-Nawawi has a similar approach in that one can visit the grave tomb of the Prophet during the Hajj. Al-Nawawi writes that everyone should see Muhammad's tomb, but they should do so as they leave. “When they leave Mecca, they should head towards the city of God'... middle of paper... they would talk to another person. Bin Baz also says not to stay long at the graves. This is to reduce crowding around the Prophet's tomb. He also disapproves of exercises such as: “placing the right hand on top of the left hand, above or below the chest, as if performing salah.” Bin Baz states that this would express submission, and submission must be directed only towards God (Fatawa of Shaykh Abdulaziz b. Baz Volume 16). Visiting Muhammad's tomb can be a very special moment for Muslims. But when you do this you need to take some precautions. They would not want to offend the Prophet himself, not even God. It is necessary to take measures to prevent this from happening, even if it may be unclear. There are different opinions on this, neither is it right nor wrong. Ultimately all one can do is follow their own interpretation of the hadiths or the writings of scholars who have studied these hadiths..
