Did you know that the largest landfill in the world is located in New York, USA? The Fresh Kills landfill covered 2,200 acres in the borough of Staten Island, New York. It was opened temporarily, but then became the world's largest landfill and largest man-made structure. Many have proposed the idea of burning the landfill, but this will not improve the situation, rather it will make it worse. We are not only infecting groundwater and soil, but also the air we breathe. As responsible global citizens, the inhabitants of this planet, Earth, must reduce, reuse and recycle waste not only to save future generations but also to save the future environment and all living creatures that inhabit it. Recycling has many benefits, some examples are: it saves money on production and energy costs, helps protect the environment from the extraction and processing of materials and means less waste to dispose of. “Recyclable material from the waste will extend the life of the county landfill, keeping county landfill rates low” (Chris 1). A landfill costs $20 million or more to build and takes millions to operate. And where does the money come from? It comes from local taxpayers. If we reduced the amount of waste thrown away, waste in landfills would be reduced and this would save the county from economic problems. There are many recyclable things that we throw in the garbage and then end up in a landfill. For example, a plastic straw, a plastic cup, bags and napkins are all recyclable materials that end up in a landfill and are becoming a threat to wildlife. Even drinking water is put at risk due to waste that ends up in the ocean or rivers. The Great Pacific... center of paper... 3.
