Topic > Analysis of My Antonia by Willa Carter - 1373

My Antonia is a classic story originally published in 1918 by Willa Cather. Cather was a famous author of the early to mid-1900s, placing her work in an era of formal, illustrative, and sophisticated writing style. She has written numerous books about life on the Great Plains, where she was born and raised. He received numerous awards for his artistic novels throughout his life. He died in 1947 and the public continues to praise his work almost a century after its publication date. Her free-spirited writing has made her an icon ever since her books hit shelves. Characters All the main characters in My Antonia are thoughtful and intelligent people, although not necessarily in terms of education or knowledge. Jim Burden, the narrator of the story, is a sincere and melancholic personality. In simple terms he is what one might call a “dreamer”. He lost both parents in an epidemic before the story begins, which gave him an introverted style when interacting with strangers. Jim's character development throughout the story is linked to his friendship with the extraordinary character of Antonia. As he gets to know her, he becomes less shy and more comfortable with other people. Antonia is a strong, independent, free spirit, destined to leave her mark on anyone who hears about her or meets her. Although Jim is the narrator of the story, Antonia is perhaps even a more important character than him. She is particularly lively and acts with a passion that Jim has never seen before. Says Jim, "I remembered what the director had said about her eyes. They were big and warm and full of light, like the sun shining on brown pools in the woods. page 17 Antonia's family has encountered many difficulties. They are immigrants in America from Bohemia, eradicating the… medium of paper… the story we follow is a retelling of one of the main characters This was an interesting way of writing the book; which the reader could always be sure of, and it added a lot to the effect of the story. My Antonia was a beautiful story to read. The writing style was peaceful and flowing. For me, it evoked the image of tall grass green moving in the waves on the great plains of Nebraska. Antonia's determination to preserve her independence, her free spirit, her outlook on life and her cheerful, joyful and lively attitude were refreshing and inspiring. The narrator's dreamy and thoughtful attitude created a sense of peace. This is a book to read when you want to feel happy and have a new, positive attitude towards life. I loved every word of this amazing story and wish it hadn't ended so quickly.
