The novel Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad has been the cause of racial discussions debating whether it should be read today. The way Conrad describes African Americans worries several critics, Achebe in particular. Achebe does not agree with Conrad's novel because in it Conrad dehumanizes the African and Achebe will not allow anyone to lower his humanity. In the first pages of his article Achebe compares Conrad as "no more a great artist than one who might be called a priest who reads mass backwards or a doctor who poisons his patients" (Achebe 9). This sentence shows how agree with Conrad. Although Conrad lived in a time when Africans did not have the best image; Achebe believes there is no excuse for writing about Africa as he did. I agree with Achebe exceptional and does not justify his racist remarks. Achebe takes offense at Conrad's novel and labels it racist.
