Client PopulationThere are several populations I am interested in, however possible preferences include families dealing with domestic abuse and those who are disabled. Working with families who have experienced domestic violence is interesting because in the past I had friends whose family dealt with domestic violence and it could clearly impact all members of the family. Seeing the difference made by those who worked to help their families made this population a preference. Another population that is a possible preference is the disabled. Interest in helping disabled people began when a faculty called Edelweiss was opened. Up until that point there had been no interaction with those who led lives different from mine. During the year he spent volunteering, changes in those who had received lessons became evident. Being able to see the results of those who had lessons kept my interest continuing. In the last two years a new side of this interest has been shown. There is someone who is a close friend who is disabled due to seizures and who has had problems with employers. Seeing how they were treated made it even clearer that this population needs help and made it an ongoing professional and personal concern. Experience with the population The population of families who have faced domestic abuse is one that I have not had the opportunity to work with. There was a year spent as a volunteer at Edelweiss Equine Assisted Therapy Group Inc. During the year 2008 several tasks were performed at the outdoor facility that housed Edleweiss. Three different activities took place during the working period at Edelweiss. The starting position was to help those who came for less… half paper… develop action plans with customers. During the internship, a favorite area is customer acquisition and evaluations. Working one-on-one with clients is something that has yet to be experienced, and learning from those who conduct assessments and intake interviews would be helpful when entering the social work field. Working with groups and helping create action plans for clients are both activities that have been covered in class, but have never been applied in a professional setting. Working with those who know what is needed when making action plans and working with groups will help because a certain method and code of behavior is expected from a social worker. In order to best serve clients when they enter the industry it is important to have a more complete understanding of these businesses and learning from those who have experience will be of great help.
