Topic > Analysis of Leviathan by Thomas Hobbles - 978

In Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes argues that an ideal state is one in which the government has all the power to protect the people and ensure security is best. Thomas Hobbes believed that people were inherently evil. He stated that people will do what they want to get what they want. He labels it a state of nature. He states that the natural state is where we are before we are actually influenced by society. He says this place is total chaos because people only do what benefits them. He describes the natural state of man as a wild and chaotic state without government. It states the idea that man naturally needs and wants order but not being able to do it our way is the best thing. He goes on to point out that the world would only be chaotic if there were no absolute monarchs. Hobbes believes that man must establish the Leviathan by entering into a social contract and only then will the world function ideally. Consider the state of nature to be the human body; the government is the head and the citizens are the body. The head has absolute control, but the body can still create damage to itself and the head, but only if the head allows it. The people (the body) must give consent to the government to have absolute government. I believe that Thomas Hobbes' vision of how society should be run is too ambitious and paves the way for tyranny and overwhelms the individual. The idea that citizens are the body and the government is the head is not unrealistic, in fact the portal or body politic is brilliant but fails to account for the individual. I believe it is not possible for man to exist without government. I believe that even in our natural state we assert some type of government. I see that man can... middle of paper... while they depend on each other. The world is very similar to a high school even on a larger scale. In a high school you can choose to be a participant who is busy, involved and undertakes many activities where they constantly work with others or you can be the bully who alone. Liberalists believe that the ideal choice is one that involves cooperation with others. It allows different people with different perspectives to meet and formulate ideas and decisions together. In a Hobbesian society or government this would not work because in a government where there is a sovereign leader, decisions are ultimately made by him or with his strong guidance. If Hobbes believes that man is bad, selfish, and evil in our natural state, he must also understand that some will still be skilled in certain areas than others, forcing men to depend on each other..
