IntroductionCoffee shops, and more specifically Starbucks, have increasingly become an essential part of many people's daily lives. So I was interested in how the culture within Starbucks reflected natural human interaction. I chose to observe the environment and interaction of people within a suburban Starbucks neighborhood for an hour. MethodologyMost ethnography is performed using inductive methodology, also known as grounded theory, meaning that theory will emerge from the data collected. I didn't go to Starbucks with the idea of testing a hypothesis. During my research, I used extensive notes because it is common practice for people to work on their laptops in a coffee shop. You could also argue that it is unusual to see someone without a tablet, laptop or other electronic device. The Starbucks environment is such that it allowed me to use full immersion techniques including the research role of a full participant. By taking on the role of full participant I kept my identity hidden but participated fully in what is the normal behavior of café visitors. In this situation I really don't think there were any ethical issues related to being a full participant, because I wasn't in the setting for more than an hour and didn't have any in-depth interviews. I also think that if I revealed my identity as a researcher, then I would risk the Hawthorne effect, meaning that the customers present would behave differently than normal because they knew I was watching them. Also, we often conduct informal research, because we analyze our surroundings and those within that environment, so it doesn't raise ethical concerns when I'm just conducting formal research... halfway through the paper... increase• there's a guy sitting at a table next to Joe (let's call him Mike) • Mike doesn't look like your typical Starbucks goer; he was just wearing a sweatshirt and slightly saggy pants with a long ponytail• he reminded me of a bum• Mike is telling Joe about a time his car skidded on ice• Jim actually has some headphones on that I couldn't see at a glance • she is now talking to someone (using headphones) about the weather • is one of the girls behind the counter wearing a Santa hat or why is she the only one at work wearing a Santa hat? • as the weather is getting nicer and worse outside, more and more people are leaving, and things like that who haven't left yet feel more and more comfortable talking about the weather with strangers or it seems that as soon as people get realize they share commonalities, are much more receptive to socializing in a public area
