The primary source that will be analyzed is a poster titled "Wanted Poster, Offering a Reward for Information Leading to the Capture of the Kelly Gang." The Kelly gang consisted of four bushranger men, Edward (Ned) Kelly, his brother Dan Kelly and two of their friends Joe Byrne and Steve Hart. Ned Kelly and his gang are one of Australia's most famous historical figures. Throughout this text, a brief history that led to the creation of the poster, the intended audience, the important features of the poster and also what can be learned from the source is explored. It is important to first know the circumstances and history of Ned Kelly and the Kelly Gang to truly understand the gravity of the poster. The first problems began for Ned Kelly when his father died and being the eldest son he had to provide for his family. He was first arrested at the age of fourteen for stealing 10 shillings from a Chinaman(___). Many other accounts of robberies and run-ins with the police followed this incident, and the Kelly family had become notorious for causing trouble. It was not until 1878 that serious chaos occurred when the newly appointed Constable Fitzpatrick was in charge of the local Greta police station. He was warned to stay away from the Kelly family and yet he ignored what was said and decided to take matters into his own hands (___). During the meeting it is said that Officer Fitzpatrick, not finding Ned or his brother at home, attacked Ned's sister, Kate, and this led Ellen Kelly, their mother, to shoot him in the wrist. Ellen Kelly was sentenced to three years in prison and brothers Ned and Dan faced fifteen years because of the false charges brought by Agent Fitzpatrick who accused them (ausfirst). As a result of this event Ned and Dan create... half of paper ......ember 1880 (1st August). Despite constant negative publicity, 30,000 people signed a petition to support Ned Kelly in hopes of overturning his conviction (Masson, 2010). From the analysis of the source we learn that the capture of the Kelly gang was a political issue of great importance. The fact that many posters were published calling for the capture of Kelly's gang shows that the government was under a lot of pressure and that by offering money as a reward they hoped to gain support. Their main goal was to get rid of the Kelly gang to restore control and authority. The poster only shows one side of the story and is very biased as the information is released by the government. Even today Ned Kelly is a controversial topic in Australian history. Even though he was a convicted criminal, many Australians believe he was an exceptional and very important person.
