Every time I turn on my laptop to complete college homework, this image constantly reminds me to keep going for those I love. I knew I wanted to be a nurse after my grandparents took care of me when I was younger. I am very lucky to have such wonderful and caring grandparents. I will never forget how much they cared for me and how much comfort they gave me when I was sick. My personal definition of nursing is embedded in my relationship with my grandparents. A nurse should be compassionate, empathetic, loving, reliable, hardworking, comforting and responsible. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on "Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned"? When my grandparents made the long journey from the Philippines to America, they knew neither the language nor the culture. The adjustment wasn't easy and they faced many challenges along the way. However, they took care of me with dedication. I was an only child, so my grandparents spent time with me while my parents worked. When I was in high school, I spent long nights doing homework. As the stress took over my body, one of my grandparents would cut fruit for me and stay up with me until I went to bed. These and many other acts of love and compassion motivated me to become a nurse. My desire to become a nurse came from my interest in assisting and caring for others. I believe that nursing is much more than administering medications, treating wounds, and performing various procedures. It's about ensuring the well-being of patients, talking to them and making them feel at home. I believe it is to the patient's advantage to treat them like a human being rather than just "another patient." Rather than treating them as simply "another patient," nurses allow the patient to feel that the nurse truly cares about their well-being. Some patients may not have friends or relatives who can visit them in the hospital; this is a critical time for the nurse to be compassionate, caring and reassuring towards the patient to make him feel at ease. Making the patient feel comfortable is one of the most important aspects of nursing care. Nursing as a holistic profession Nurses work to promote health, prevent disease, and ensure patient well-being and safety. It makes a difference when a nurse is reliable, competent and caring; this shows that the patient will feel comfortable knowing that his nurse can take care of him. Competent nursing skills are essential for safe practices and can be acquired not only through education but also through communication with patients and their relatives. I think being a nurse is about having selfless respect for others without expecting a reward in return. While volunteering at my local hospital, I noticed that they not only take care of their patients physically, but they bring emotional happiness to their patients when they check on them. When I see the actions of nurses, I believe they feel a sense of joy and accomplishment knowing that their patient will benefit from their care. Even though the nurses were busy, they never stopped smiling.
