I spent a week at the Institute of Medical Sciences and the Rowett Institute in Aberdeen and my time there made me realize how different being a doctor could be as there were many doctors there who were part-time professors or carrying out research projects while they were a practicing doctor. I also attended a 4 day Doctors at Work programme, where I shadowed an orthopedic surgeon at the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital. During my time with him, I worked in an outpatient clinic specifically for children with cerebral palsy. This opportunity taught me the meaning of communication and I witnessed the importance of empathy and compassion; attributes that doctors must always display, especially towards the most vulnerable patients such as children. Since February this year I have been regularly volunteering at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, speaking to patients and helping the department in any way I can. Through this, I was able to develop and demonstrate my interpersonal skills and recognized the significant effect that human contact can have on an individual. Many of the patients I have spoken to so far have been ostracized by their families and do not receive visitors very often. It filled me with so much joy to see their faces light up as I walked in, knowing I had made a difference in their day. The combination of doing this volunteer work and spending time in a medical environment only intensified my desire to pursue medicine. My majors reflect my interest in pursuing medicine, having studied mathematics, chemistry, human biology, English and French. They have all been challenging in their own way; with science testing my analytical skills and ability to think logically and English and French pushing me to think more creatively. I am very committed and motivated and believe I have the academic skills to be an impeccable medical student. Personal Achievements I have achieved both the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh awards and am currently completing the Gold award. Through this I improved my communication and teamwork skills. Furthermore, I understood the importance of perseverance, especially during the part of the expedition, in which we had to overcome many obstacles.
