He lived with his mother Sybrina Fulton in Miami Gardens, Florida. Trayvon's father was a truck driver and his mother was a program coordinator. Martin's parents divorced 4 years after he was born, but while they were together his parents had a plan for him and he would not allow himself to be swallowed up by the evil of the world. They wanted him to do many sports, activities like horse riding, and they wanted to show him what a great place in the world is, to discover new places. “At Carol City High, where Martin went to school before Krop, the boy took an English Honors class, even though his favorite subject was said to be mathematics. Tall and athletic with tattoos of family members' names on his body, the often quiet Martin was very interested in studying aviation and potentially becoming a pilot. Yet he had also begun to have problems at school, receiving suspensions at various times" (Biography, 2014). For the most part, Trayvon Martin was not a troubled kid, was involved in many extracurricular activities, and was truly dedicated to his academics. This also shows that he wasn't the type to cause trouble, or the type to get involved with those who are up to no good. On February 26, 2012 Trayvon was disarmed and killed by George Zimmerman. This was the only murder that created controversy around the world. The evening proved to be a fateful and catastrophic moment for Trayvon. While visiting his father who lived in Sanford, Florida, he decided to go to the supermarket to get some iced tea and Zimmerman became alert because that was his deal. George Zimmerman was the "neighborhood watch" for his gated community. The man had his own gun and had a license, and he was also very racist towards people of color. Whenever he learned of an African American man he became alert and automatically called the police without any evidence that there was any suspicion afoot. When Zimmerman saw Trayvon he decided to automatically call the police and say, "he told the dispatcher he observed 'a really suspicious guy' who was 'walking around, looking around.'Zimmerman also described Martin as someone who “is up to no good, or is on drugs or something” (Munro, 2012, para. 2). He then started following Martin, which led to a confrontation and also the death of Trayvon. George Zimmerman shot him in the chest. Trayvon died instantly from excessive blood loss. The place where he died was about 100 meters from where he was staying. The innocent young teenager did nothing wrong, but because of the color of his skin he was automatically degraded and seen as a threat. The Case The Trayvon Martin case started out unfair and, as many have said, unjust. Initially, on March 8, 2012, Martin's parents had decided to draw attention to the case, but it was known that George Zimmerman had not been charged from the beginning because the police officers had claimed that it was a act of "self-defense" and that there was no evidence to prove that Zimmerman said what happened was false. Since Zimmerman has not been charged, Trayvon's parents hire a lawyer to defend and ask the police to arrest the murder, but it fails. "Trayvon's parents renewed calls for Zimmerman's arrest after the release of the 9/11 tapes, and college students gathered outside the Seminole County criminal courts to protest the incident they believed was a case of racial profiling". From this quote you may have noticed that once the police decided to release the tapes of the shooting, it went viral and many people came out and expressed their opinion on the situation, this provided more attention to justify and notice this case. Later on March 18, a petition calling for Zimmerman's arrest was posted on Change.org. More than 2 million people from all over the world sign it. The Civil Rights Division and the FBI decide to open an investigation into the shooting, to actually get the right answers they need to reach a conclusion. Once the investigation began, in support of Trayvon, many people began to protest/demonstrate. One demonstration was the "Million Hood March" which took place in New York, and other protests took place in Los Angeles and Sanford Florida. tons of people traveled far to participate in it and provide a foundation for it. President Barack Obama was also in office during this time and had a word for the incident. He came out very personal but made no comment on the legal terms: “If I had a son he would look like Trayvon…” (Editors, 2018). When he said this he showed his support for Trayvon's family. While this was happening, there were a lot of people on Zimmerman's side. “Joe Oliver came out to his friend Zimmerman's defense, saying, 'He's a thoughtful human being. I mean, he took a man's life and he has no idea what to do about it. He is extremely sorry about this." Craig Sonner, Zimmerman's legal counsel, said Zimmerman feared for his life. "For some reason people came to believe that the killer was innocent and had done nothing wrong other than protect yourself, protect yourself? Nothing was happening at the time, and he racially profiled someone because of the color of their skin and then shot because he "feared for his life", obviously we can understand that this is a hate crime. Zimmerman tried to look like the victim and tried to say that Martin did him a lot of damage, because he didn't want to be seen as the bad guy. On April 2, George Zimmerman decides that if he is charged with Martin's shooting he will surrender and the his lawyer Corey chooses to submit the case to a grand jury. The following week, on April 11, Zimmerman is arrested and charged with murder.
